- Discipleship in the Old Testament
Deuteronomy 6:4-9 (ESV)
4 "Hear, O Israel: The LORD our God, the LORD is one. 5 You shall love the LORD your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your might. 6 And these words that I command you today shall be on your heart. 7 You shall teach them diligently to your children, and shall talk of them when you sit in your house, and when you walk by the way, and when you lie down, and when you rise. 8 You shall bind them as a sign on your hand, and they shall be as frontlets between your eyes. 9 You shall write them on the doorposts of your house and on your gates.
Discipleship begins at home.
- Discipleship in the Gospels
Matthew 28:19-20 (ESV)
19 Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 20 teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age."
The Great Commission is all about relationships
- Discipleship in Paul’s letters
2Timothy 3:10-11, 14 (ESV)
10 You, however, have followed my teaching, my conduct, my aim in life, my faith, my patience, my love, my steadfastness, 11 my persecutions and sufferings that happened to me at Antioch, at Iconium, and at Lystra--which persecutions I endured; yet from them all the Lord rescued me.
14 But as for you, continue in what you have learned and have firmly believed, knowing from whom you learned it.
Discipleship is dependent on relationships!
A 3-Year Experiment:
What would our church look like if we truly sought disciple-making relationships for three years?
