Hosea 13:3 ESV

“Therefore they shall be like the morning mist or like the dew that goes early

away, like the chaff that swirls from the threshing floor or like smoke from a

window.”

Wow! Where has the time gone? You all have heard that time flies as you get

older, and the single thing that weighs on my mind is this–we don’t get another

chance to live this out, so I need to make this count!!

So what now? For some reason or another I have been thinking a lot about this

lately. How can I make sure that I’m making the best choice for my future and

the future of my family? Looking backwards at age 30, there are some things

that I would most definitely have done differently. Yet God has been gracious to

me and used my unguided choices and direction to bring me to where I am

today.

Moving forward, one of my greatest fears is that I will repeat past mistakes and

look back as an older man and wish it were different. All the best intentions in

the world if not guided down a specific path won’t end up where I want to be.

     Direction–not intention, determines our destination.

With that said, the path that we choose is so very important to determine where

we want to end up. Your path that you choose for your life and your direction is

so important because without major course adjustments, the end to the path

that you’re on can only be what is at the end of the path. I think that we

understand that but refuse to honestly look down that path and realize that’s

where we are headed. So we trick ourselves to believe that it will be different for

us; that somehow it didn’t work for everyone else on this path. Not us though.

We will be the one that changes the end.

So if we want our path to end where God desires us, to have the most impact

for the sake of the Gospel, then we have to be all so careful to make sure we

pick a path for our lives that ends where He wants us to be. If the end goal is

maturity in our relationship with Christ, then the path that we choose better have

steps to see that happen. We won’t stumble into godliness, it’s a path that we

choose which directs to the end desire that we are seeking.

So pray with me that God will allow us to choose a path that leads to where He

wants us to be and impacts others for the Gospel. In the grand scheme of life

that is all that matters. Everything else is really trivial and meaningless.

Just some thoughts to think about…

May 20, 2016 – Read Romans 1: 8-17

andrew may 20 blog

If you are reading this, I want to ask you to stop for a moment to read Romans 1: 8-17. Go ahead, I’ll wait for a moment until your done. . .

Ok are you back? Let’s seek to understand this short passage as much as we can. How often do we really do that? That is: seek to really understand a passage of scripture. Let’s try it. Ok here are a few questions to answer:

  1. Who wrote this passage? – The apostle Paul
  2. To whom and for what purpose was this passage written? – Paul wrote the book of Romans which was a letter to the church in Rome
  3. When did he write it?- Most likely AD 56

In this book, Paul is writing to his fellow believers in Rome to encourage them. He tells them what a great job they’re doing for the Kingdom of God, how well they’re preaching the Gospel, and how far the news of their fervor for Christ is spreading. He tells them he misses them, how much he wants to come see them, and how he also will continue to spread the Gospel, because he is unashamed of it.

This letter from Paul is the kind of thing we don’t see much of today. The church in Rome was in the center of civilization for much of the world. Paul sees how effective these believers are in sharing the love of Christ that he is inspired by them.

I wonder if anyone would think that about our church. . .  I wonder if anyone would see the work we’re doing for Christ and those around us and notice it. The church in Rome was noticed far and wide, but I wonder how much we’re noticed by our own small town!

My fellow believers, I’m asking us to look at our individual walks with Christ, and our usefulness as the local church to those around us. What impact are we making? I’m not suggesting that we’re having no impact, but I’m asking you, as I will, to examine just what kind of impact we are having, and more importantly, the kind we could and should be having.

I pray that we would be a Romans 1:16 church. May we become a force for the Kingdom of God here in our community and let the news of Christ spread through what we’re doing individually and separately.

Your unashamed brother in Christ,

Andrew

Romans 1:16  “For I am not ashamed of this Good News about Christ. It is the power of God at work, saving everyone who believes—the Jew first and also the Gentile.”

65 DAYS!!!

was just a normal day in March.  I did my regular Wednesday grocery shopping, went trailer shopping with Todd, Emma taught me how to leap frog, the RA boys shot their bow & arrows and I had Chinese leftovers for supper.  (I keep a journal which is the only reason why I can remember those details, btw.)

65 days from now…..

will be… the first day of …. wait for it ….

Vacation Bible School!!

Which is, for sure, one of my most favorite weeks out of the year.  The church will be SUBMERGED in underwater decorations and a blue tint will cover every single thing and person who enters.   Adults, youth and kids will be pumped and ready to dive into the week ahead, and a good number of us will already have our outfits laid out for all of the spirit nights.  Indeed, I could probably go ahead and fill in these details and others in my journal, even these 65 days in advance.

What I can’t write in or foretell yet are two big things.

Number One:   Who will fill in all of the almost 80+ spots to lead and love our kids for the VBS week?  What teachers, crafters, greeters, decorators, musicians, cooks and all of the other workers needed will step up to give a week to share and model Jesus to the kids of our church and community?

I hope YOU will be prayerfully and willingly thinking about where you can serve and then put your name on the VBS wall SOON so we can get the team together. There are many places to serve and many levels of commitment which can fit all abilities and availability.  And you will have a blast with all ages of your church family while serving Christ.  Guaranteed.

Number Two:  Yes, the halls will be bathed in a sea of blue, but will our entire week be bathed in a sea of prayer which can begin now and continue through our VBS week?

We have so many talents, abilities and resources right here in our church, but we are fooling ourselves to think that we would want to try and do this on our own without God’s power and purpose being at the forefront.

Let me challenge all of us to be intentional about praying for VBS starting now and for the next 65+ days.  Make a reminder note card to put in your kitchen sink window, write it on your rear view mirror with an Expo marker or even start cutting fish shapes out of various kinds of paper and pray as you cut out each one.  (Then give me your fish shapes so I can add them to the other schools of fish others have cut out and prayed for to decorate our hallways.  Seriously.  People are doing that.  Myself included.)

65 Days…There you go.

Get Stronger: Here are some exercises

We are one-third of the way through 2016. Since January we have been focusing on being stronger spiritually as individuals and as a church family. I pray that you have been seeing some growth. Over these four months we have been seeking to be stronger in prayer, stronger in discipleship, and stronger in faith. These journeys of growth are ongoing. In this life we are never finished growing. So let’s do some exercises. Spend time today praying. Use Jesus’ prayer in Matthew 6 and Luke 11 as your guide to pray about the things of God first, then for what you and others need after that. Make a decision to be a Jesus follower. Let’s make our decision to follow Jesus more than just lip service. Let’s show that we are Jesus followers with our hands and feet, with our words and our attitudes. We live in a world that desperately needs to see and know genuine Jesus followers – not just “church-goers,” not just a demographic called “evangelicals,” but genuine Jesus followers whose actions and attitudes are in line with the Scriptures. If we will follow, Jesus has promised that He will help us (Matthew 4:19). Trust Him.

To grow stronger requires discipline and commitment. It’s not easy, but it is simple. (I think we have often made things too complicated in church.) We encourage three simple things that will help you grow stronger as a Jesus follower:

  1. Large group/small group – make a commitment to be in worship and Bible study each week.
    • Worship and Scripture are at the heart of all we do as children of God. Without worship and Bible study we will never grow stronger spiritually.
  2. Mentoring – Seek someone to help you grow spiritually and help someone to grow spiritually.
    • We are not made to go on this journey alone. We need each other.
  3. Talk about it – Have a meaningful spiritual conversation with an unbeliever each week.
    • Develop the “habit” of including your faith in everyday conversations. Let’s learn to include Jesus in everyday conversations. Conversations, not just declarations. Engage people in conversation. Ask them what they think. Don’t just unload what you think.

These are not easy things to do, but they are worth the discipline and effort to be on a path to growth and spiritual strength. As the year progresses, I look forward to hearing back from you about how you are growing.

Strive for Excellence

Some time ago I read an article that explored the topic of how we are to serve God; more specifically, serve with excellence.  (I cannot find the article to reference now though.)    Several questions were brought up that really make you think about this topic.  As we strive to reach out and minister to those in the neighborhoods around us, what must our attitude be? An attitude of doing things with excellence.   I have to admit that I don’t always do it but must strive for it.  My desire is to see this church continue to reach out and minister to those around us for many years to come.  To do this we must have more people stepping up to lead in vital ministry areas and to serve with excellence.  Consider how you would answer these questions, then seek God’s guidance on what is next for you.

  • If I am serving with our young people (or any age), do I see my service as doing something ok or do I see it as impacting eternity by the quality of my service?
  • At my place of employment, do I work just to get a paycheck or do I see my work as if I am working directly for God?
  • Do I place most of my attention on what I am to be doing or do I spend more time being concerned about what others are not doing?

Let’s serve with excellence; God deserves it.
