His divine power has granted to us all things that pertain to life and godliness, through the knowledge of him who called us to his own glory and excellence. (2 Peter 1:3, ESV)
2 Peter 1:3 is a big statement for children of God. This scripture states that God has given us everything we need for life and godliness. And it is true! God has indeed provided everything his children need to live the life he calls us to live. This coming week we will be focusing on this truth during Vacation Bible School, teaching our grade school students this great truth of the Bible. We can depend on God to provide for us everything we truly need. That certainly does not mean we get everything we want. But it does mean God will give us what we need to serve him and to follow Jesus obediently. It means God will provide what we truly need when we need it.
I have seen this demonstrated in my own life in just the past few days. I arrived home from a three-week trip to Israel and went straight to the hospital to see my dad who was dealing with multiple health issues related to advanced Parkinson’s disease. Three days after I returned home my dad went to be with Jesus. In the midst of those last days of his life, I knew, as did the rest of my family, that God’s timing is always right. It was time for dad to be freed from health struggles. He himself told us that he was ready. Dad knew God’s peace. And God has given us peace that passes understanding. Even in the midst of sadness we know that God provides everything we need.
Not only at the end of life does God provide for us. Peter tells us that God provides everything we need for life – right now! The promises of God aren’t only for the life to come one day. God’s promises enable us to live for Him obediently and to bring God glory every day! Our vision statement here at Marshfield First Baptist is, “We exist to glorify God and to see lives changed.” God is the One who enables us to achieve this vision. We exist for him and for his glory. And he is the One who enables us to do this very thing! He calls us to live godly lives for him and he provides what we need. What an amazing God we serve!
What do you need to do today to be obedient to God? Whatever that is, know that He has already provided for you. As you trust him and in his son Jesus, God grants to us all things needed for life and godliness, through the knowledge of him who called us to his own glory and excellence.
